Who is eligible to submit to The Headlight Review?

We invite submissions from both emerging and experienced creators. We strongly encourage submissions from marginalized and underrepresented voices, including creators of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Our mission is to bring people together through the power of great art.

What types of work does The Headlight Review accept?

For regular issues, we accept submissions in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. We are particularly interested in works that challenge the boundaries of form, language, plot, character, and prosody.

Our “High-Beams” section publishes features, news, and other items. If you’re interested in submitting contact the editors at headlightreview@gmail.com.

How often does The Headlight Review publish?

The Headlight Review is published twice a year, with issues released in Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer.

Is there a fee to submit my work?

No, there is no fee to submit your work for our regular issues. Submissions are open year-round. The Headlight Review staff reads for our Fall/Winter issue in August – November and the Spring/Summer edition in February – May of each year. Please expect responses to occur within those reading windows.

How do I submit my work to The Headlight Review?

We use Submittable to process submissions. Please refer to our submission guidelines on the website for detailed instructions.

How will my work be edited?

Submissions are reviewed in-house by THR staff before they are sent to our guest editors for final approval. After accepted, guest editors and in-house editors will provide editorial feedback, including development and copyediting for you to consider before publication.

How does The Headlight Review approach diversity and inclusion?

We are deeply committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity in both our staff and contributors. We value a range of editorial experiences and consider aspects of identity—such as race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, or disability status—as integral to artistic expression.

Who is behind The Headlight Review?

THR is produced by graduate students and faculty advisors from Kennesaw State University’s Master of Arts in Professional Writing Program.

Are there any special contests or awards offered by The Headlight Review?

Yes, we host an annual chapbook contest and present the Anthony Grooms Short Fiction Prize.

Can I access The Headlight Review online?

Absolutely! The online edition of The Headlight Review is freely available to all.

Does The Headlight Review produce print editions?

Although an online magazine, THR is in production on a print anthology of early work and our first 2 digital volumes. We also produce a print chapbook and a small run of the Grooms Prize winner every year.

Who holds the rights to the work published in The Headlight Review?

Authors retain all rights to their work after it is first published in The Headlight Review. We ask that authors provide credit in future publications of the work. If you wish to reproduce any material, please contact the individual authors and/or the editors.
